THE WAY WE ARE - Lyrics

I'VE GOT PEACE AND QUIET     (c) 1999  by Fred Moolten

I’ve got peace and quiet, I’ve got peace and quiet
Haven’t had that for so long
I’ve got peace and quiet, haven’t had that for so long
I’ve got peace and quiet, ever since you’ve gone

I’ve got no more fighting, no tears, no accusations
No more words to hurt me from now on
No tears, no accusations, no more words to hurt me from now on
I’ve got no more fighting, ever since you’ve gone

No more need to worry, worry do you love me?
Worry am I doing something wrong?
Worry do you love me, worry am I doing something wrong?
No more need to worry, ever since you’ve gone

I’ve got peace and quiet, I’ve got peace and quiet
Haven’t had that for so long
I’ve got peace and quiet, haven’t had that for so long
I’ve got peace and quiet, ever since you’ve gone

NIGHT LOVE      (c) 1998 by Fred Moolten

Tonight we met and talked for hours
We’ve wrapped ourselves in night’s embrace
I watch the moonlight through the window
Watch it caress your face

I know how intimate the night is
I say the words that lovers say
And every word more true than true love
Until night turns to day

I don’t think that I know what love is
It isn’t moonlight on a face
It’s not the closeness felt by strangers
Bewitched by nighttime’s brief embrace

To me love always turns illusion
And dies in ordinary light
And every fire cools to ashes
Without the spell of night

I hope someday that someone loves you
Who knows what someone that can be
I hope it’s someone who deserves you
I know it can’t be me

EXPEDITION RAG        (c) 1999 by Fred Moolten

Life’s an expedition into the unknown
But I get no thrill exploring if I’m traveling alone

I’m a mountain climber and I’m offering you my rope
Want to tie you to me while we scramble up the slope

I’m a deep sea diver searching for a sunken ship
If we go down together, we can have ourselves a trip

I’m a lonesome flier and the sky’s a lonely place
But if we take off together, we’ll be up in outer space

I’m a lonesome flier
I’m a deep sea diver
I’m a mountain climber
Wanna fly, dive, climb with you

I want to climb up where I never climbed before
There’s no inch that I won’t dare explore
When we reach the summit gonna want to climb more with you

I want to dive down deep where hidden treasure lies
Rise up and wait until you’re ready to rise
Then blast off faster than a rocket flies with you

There’s treasure in the body and there’s treasure in the heart
And I hope I’m not so stupid that I can’t tell them apart
I’ve got love to last a lifetime, couldn’t hide it if I tried
But I’ve also got this feeling that you’re ready for a ride

So I’m revving up my engine, join me if you dare
Bring your heart, bring your body, don’t bring anything to wear
We’ll be hot enough without it when I get there with you

I’m a deep sea diver, want to dive for hidden treasure with you
I’m a mountain climber, want to reach that summit with you
I’m a lonesome flier, want to take off together with you

AFRAID TO FALL     (c) 1999 by Fred Moolten

I prayed for this - you’ve come back home
So why don’t I act warmer?
You ask me where the passion went I used to share with you
I’ll try to give an answer
I hope I don’t start crying
I think that you’ve mistaken me for someone you once knew

It’s not that I don’t want you back
It’s not that I don’t love you
I’ve loved you all these lonely months and paid the painful cost
It’s not that I’ve lost passion
I’m passionate as always
But something else inside me has been forever lost

Love the way I used to love, vulnerable, unguarded
Eager to hold nothing back, daring to risk all
Love without a safety net, sure that you would catch me
You can’t have that from me again, I’m too afraid to fall

You say you wished you’d never left
I guess that makes two of us
If wishing were the secret, I’d make a wish or two
I’d wish I didn’t love you
Or could love without remembering
But I don’t think that either wish is likely to come true

Your bags are only half unpacked
The evening star is rising
If you can’t stay, don’t stay the night, let’s not stretch out the pain
Look in my eyes and tell me
Do you in truth still want me
Knowing that there’s something you can never have again?

Love the way I used to love, vulnerable, unguarded
Eager to hold nothing back, daring to risk all
Love without a safety net, sure that you would you’d catch me
You can’t have that from me again, I’m too afraid to fall

I prayed for this - you’ve come back home
So why don’t I act warmer?
You ask me where the passion went I used to share with you
I’ll try to give an answer
I hope I don’t start crying
I think that you’ve mistaken me for someone you once knew

COMING TO THE VALLEY     (c) 1999 by Fred Moolten

When I was four, Mama took my hand
She said “you’re too young to understand
I’m coming to the valley and I see it so near
But you’ll have a long road ‘til you get there”

            Chorus:
Well, I’ve been travelin’ since the early dawn
And the shadows grow longer in the setting sun
I’m coming to the valley and it’s deep and wide
But I’ll get some rest on the other side

When I was seven I wanted to know
When the winter comes where the fireflies go
Pa said “fetch more wood, do like you’re told
‘Cause the snow is deep and the night is cold”

              Chorus

When I was a man, I built me a home
It had some wood, it had some stone
I lived there well, I lived there long
It stood for a time, but it’s now long gone

              Chorus

I had a wife, we had a son
We had some sorrow, we had some fun
We had a dog, he grew old and lame
It’s been a while, I forgot his name

              Chorus

I’ve walked in sun, I’ve walked in rain
I’ve walked with joy, I’ve walked with pain
I’ve walked in summer, I’ve walked in snow
I know where the fireflies go

              Chorus

CAT LULLABY      (c) 1999 by Fred Moolten

I’ve watched you sleep so many times before
Your fur and whiskers gentle to my eye
I used to wonder where you went in dreams
Lie quiet now and hear my lullaby

You’ll go now where the dish is always full
Where water always shimmers in your bowl
You’ll go to where the winter sun is warm
You’ll go to where the summer nights are cool

And though the sparrow flies beyond your reach
You’ll climb the highest fence with careless grace
And all the dogs will be as small as mice
And where you prowl not one will dare to chase

Don’t be afraid, you want this pain to end
The vet’s your friend, he knows this road you’re on
Feel my caress, and listen to my song
              I promise I won’t go before you’re gone

When you were young, I chased you through the grass
You ran too fast, I never caught you then
And now once more you’re leaving me behind
But someday I’ll catch up with you again

I’ve watched you sleep so many times before
Your fur and whiskers gentle to my eye
I used to wonder where you went in dreams
Lie quiet now and hear my lullaby

TALKING TO THE DARKNESS      (c) 1999 by Fred Moolten

Well, Steve just started college,  Linda’s son is two today
Your mom and I just sold the house, we’re moving to
L.A.
I don’t believe in ghosts, but I’ve opened up your room
And I’m talking to the darkness, and I’m sitting here alone

You left this room an awful mess, your yearbook’s on the chair
Graduation dress beside it, one you never got to wear
I no longer think of you each day, after all our lives go on
But I’m talking to the darkness, and I’m sitting here alone

And I ask what secret sorrow stole your love of life away
Why a hundred pills were easier than to wake up every day
And they’ve told me that it’s not our fault, just something inside you
And I listen to the darkness, for a voice to say “that’s true”

But I wonder why I never thought when I went upstairs that night
To just stop by your room to check and see if you’re all right
I sometimes dream I start for bed, then turn back to your room
But dreams are dreams, and in this world I’m sitting here alone

Still, my dreams are private journeys to where only I can go
Where the dead dance with the living, and the winds of time won’t blow
And there is no pain or sorrow, and there are no rules but one
Come as often as you wish, but you have to leave alone

We’re preparing for the movers, what’s not packed gets thrown away
Your unworn graduation dress?  I’m not sure what to say
I can talk to darkness all night long, I know you won’t appear
I just hope you’ve graduated to a happier place than here

Well, Steve just started college,  Linda’s son is two today
Your mom and I just sold the house, we’re moving to
L.A.
I don’t believe in ghosts, but I’ve opened up your room
And I’m talking to the darkness, and I’m sitting here alone
And I’m talking to the darkness, and I’m sitting here alone

THERE'S MORE TO A BOOK      (c) 1998 by Fred Moolten

H: I love how your eyes seem to twinkle when we’re talking
and when I watch you walking, the graceful way you guide

S: There’s more to a book than the picture on the cover
If you want to be my lover, you should try to look inside

S: Can’t believe our wedding’s coming, My God I’m so excited
Can’t keep straight who we invited or where my bridesmaid went

H: There’s more to getting married than this last minute fussing
There’s things that need discussing, do we buy a home or rent?

S: You’re not tuned to my wavelength
H: It’s you who needs the tuning
S: C’mon, let’s not start ruining a sunny day like this
H: OK, let’s just forget it, we can talk it out tomorrow
S: That’s fine if I can borrow your lips for one more kiss

H: This married life is great, love to watch you take a shower
Then make love for near an hour, loving you is such a joy
S: There are ways to be loving without being horizontal
You carry on and on ‘til I just feel like I’m your toy

S: I’m so glad you got that raise that lets us pay our mortgage fully
Your boss may be a bully but we’re richer than we planned
H: There’s more to a job than bringing home the bacon
When you hear me bellyachin’ you should try to understand

S: You’re not tuned to my wavelength
H: It’s you who needs the tuning
S: C’mon, let’s not start ruining a sunny day like this
H: OK, let’s just forget it, we can talk it out tomorrow
S: That’s fine if I can borrow your lips for one more kiss

H: There’s more to divorce than dividing up the dishes
There are shared dreams and wishes that no couple can divide
S: My lawyer says I’m lucky, I got the things I wanted
How come I feel as haunted as a house where someone died?

H: I saw you on the street, and I thought “I wish I knew her
If I could just talk to her, I’m sure we’d get along”
I heard myself keep saying “I’ve still got time to do it”
And then before I knew it, I turned ‘round and you were gone

S: I saw you on the street, and I thought “I wish I knew him
If I could just talk to him, I’m sure we’d get along”
I heard myself keep saying “I’ve still got time to do it”
And then before I knew it, I turned ‘round and you were gone

ANNIVERSARY TUNE      (c) 1998 by Fred Moolten

It's our anniversary - ten years that we've been married
Sometimes I remember other torches that we've carried
One of yours has since become a big financial whiz
One of mine's now famous and is starring in show biz

Time for us to look back and to ask how are we doing
Should we celebrate or is today a day for rueing?
Did we hit the jackpot or did we completely miss?
Well, I guess my answer
Goes a bit like this -

Some bets I win, and
Some bets I lose
I shout for joy, or
I sing the blues, but
I'll trust my luck on, the one I'm stuck on - you

I never whistle
Won't hum a tune
I'd rather croak than
Attempt to croon, but
I'll always sing for, I've got a thing for - you

You can be outrageous, you can be so kind
You make joy contagious, or make me lose my mind
When I look at you though I'm so glad my love's not blind
Life with you is sublime - some of the time

I know your smile, and
I know that frown
One turns me on, and
The other turns me down
But frown or smile, love, you know that I'll love you

Once had a girfriend
We used to date
Was always cheerful
And never late, but
I'll always wait for, who cares how late for - you

Before we married
You'd treat me nice
You always praised me
Took my advice, but
Who cares who heeds me, if someone needs me - you

You can be a kitten, you can be a bear
I'm twice shy once bitten by a temper quick to flare
When I lose my own though you know how to clear the air
You become the balm, that turns my storm to calm

More hot than fire
More cold than ice
One cup of sugar
Two cups of spice
No ice is icier, but no spice spicier, than - you - you - you - you

Now I've been teasin'
In this my song
But there's a reason
We've lasted long
My lover and friend is - until the end is - you - - you

For rich or poorer
For better or worse
In health and sickness
And in prose or verse
Come storm or sun, love
I'll know but one love - you

Forsaking others
For you alone
To love and cherish
Til our days are done
None other never
One heart forever - you.

IT AIN'T ROCK    (c) 1999 by Fred Moolten

I hear that Mozart’s really somethin’
I hear that Bach’s one cool dude too
But if you wanna get my joints jumpin’
Only one kind of music’s gonna do

It’s got drums that resound with the rhythm
It’s got tunes I can whistle and sing
It’s got bands that know what to do with ‘em
And hey - what’ the name of this thing?

Chorus:
It ain’t rock,  it ain’t rock, it ain’t rock and roll
Take a simple song, add a Dixie beat, then a little blues flavor that’s oh so sweet
And I’m stamping my feet to the music that stirs my soul

Forget pop and rap, they’re just so-so
And the same goes for country as well
And ballads, they’re just too slow, so
It takes something else to ring my bell

It takes drums that resound with the rhythm
It takes tunes I can whistle and sing
It takes bands that know what to do with ‘em
And hey - what’ the name of this thing?

 Chorus

Old MacDonald just gave up farming
Yankee Doodle just rode into town
Paul Revere didn’t find it alarming
So come listen to what’s goin’ down

Hear the drums that resound with the rhythm
Hear the tunes you can whistle and sing
Hear the bands that know what to do with ‘em
Now let’s hear the name of that thing

 Chorus

A WOMAN'S WALK     (c) 1998 by Fred Moolten

When you walk you show me how a woman walks
You show me even though you don’t mean to

When you laugh you teach me how a woman laughs
And I hear promises you never made

You - I watch and listen as you walk and laugh

When you walk you tease me with your woman’s walk
You tease me even though you don’t mean to

When you laugh I hear your soft inviting song
An invitation that you never send

You - I watch and listen as you walk and laugh

Tell me when the day will come you walk for me
You walk for me because you’re wanting to

Tell me when the day will come you laugh for me
An invitation that says "please respond"

You - I watch and listen as you walk and laugh
I’m waiting for the walk you walk for me

NIGHT SONG       (c) 1998 by Fred Moolten

Night song.  Night song.    Mister, listen to the night song.    Sister, listen to the night song.

Hear the rumble of the freight train.  Hear the honking of the taxis.  Hear the trumpets from the jazz joints.     Night song.

See that couple trading whispers.  They've been married fifteen years now. They're not married to each other.    Night song.

The lights are flashing to the night song. The cats are meowing to the night song.   The rats are gnawing to the night song.    Night song.

Hear the silence in the alley.  There's a mugging in the darkness.  Now you hear the footsteps running.  Night song.

There's a stabbing down on Elm Street. Blood is running on the sidewalk. Hear the music of the sirens.   Night song.

The lights are flashing to the night song. The cats are meowing to the night song.   The rats are gnawing to the night song.    Night song.

Look up at that open window.   See the shadow of the lovers.   Hear their passionate crescendo.   Night song.

Down the street, the drunks are stumbling. And the working girls are working.  Mister, how about a date tonight?    Night song.

The lights are flashing to the night song. The cats are meowing to the night song.   The rats are gnawing to the night song.    Night song.

Mister, listen to the night song.    Sister, listen to the night song.   Night song.
